This is not coffee in the usual sense. It is made from the roasted roots of the motlopi, the shepherd’s tree, an evergreen so useful across the Kalahari that it is widely called the Tree of Life. Brewed, it gives a dark cup with an earthy, gently sweet character and no caffeine at all. Sheroo is made by Dinah Bota, who comes from Kolonkwaneng in the Kgalagadi south. Her late grandmother taught her how to make it. She started producing it commercially after hearing people say their doctors had told them to give up caffeine, and there was nothing for them to drink instead. Digging the roots is hard work, and she does it with help from her siblings. Drink it black or with milk, the way you would take ordinary coffee. Caffeine free, so it works late in the evening. One hundred percent natural, 150g. Made in Botswana from indigenous motlopi roots.
